Cheryl L. Sovern - Partner
Cheryl L. Sovern is a partner in the firm of DuCharme, Clark & Sovern, LLP. She earned her Juris Doctor degree from Albany Law School with a concentration in the field of Family/Elder Law. She won the Albany Law School Client Counseling Moot Court Competition. Her areas of practice include labor and employment matters, civil litigation, business and corporate law and family/matrimonial law. She also represents clients on appellate matters in the Third Department.
She represents plaintiffs in employment discrimination matters against both public and private employers. She has represented plaintiff-employees against municipalities pertaining to Civil Service status. Ms. Sovern's employment law experience includes EEOC and New York State Division of Human Rights' investigations where Ms. Sovern has represented both employers and employees. Ms. Sovern also extends her experience to litigation in the federal courts where matters of federal law are at issue.
In representing businesses, Ms. Sovern has assisted her clients in forming the corporate entity, purchasing/selling a business and even closing down their business following a sale. She has applied for and obtained liquor licenses as well as tax exempt status for businesses she represents. Ms. Sovern's hands-on approach with her clients allows them to be a part of the process which, in turn, educates the client on the corporate responsibilities which are needed to maintain corporate protections against personal liability.
In representing family and matrimonial clients, Ms. Sovern takes a pragmatic approach to the issues and works on determining what her clients' goals are and then implementing an approach that assists the client longterm. The process includes keeping the client involved as well as informing and educating clients on the issues at hand. Ms. Sovern practices primarily in Saratoga and Schenectady Supreme and Family Courts, but has also represented clients in Albany, Fulton, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Warren and Washington County.
Volunteerism is an important part of Ms. Sovern's life. As such, Ms. Sovern currently provides pro bono legal assistance through the Adirondack Women's Bar Association DV Clinic and also participates in the family court appeals program in the Third Department and takes occasional cases from the Legal Aid Society.
Ms. Sovern resides in Saratoga County with her husband and touts her greatest accomplishment as her part in raising their two children, Amanda and Andrew. Ms. Sovern also enjoys hiking and camping with her two german shepherds, Oshie and Mischa.
